Singulair and Pregnancy Category B
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) uses a category system to classify the possible risks to a fetus when a specific medicine is taken during pregnancy. Pregnancy Category B is given to medicines that have not been studied in pregnant humans but that do not appear to cause harm to the fetus in animal studies.

When large doses of Singulair were given to pregnant rats, no problems were seen with the pregnant rats or the fetal rats.

However, it is important to note that animals do not always respond to medicines in the same way that humans do, and the full risks of using the drug when pregnant are not known. Therefore, a pregnancy Category B medicine should be given to a pregnant woman only if the healthcare provider believes that the benefits to the mother outweigh any possible risks to the unborn child.

Allergies are a pain at the best of times, let alone when we are pregnant and want to provide the most healthy and calm environment for our growing baby. For expectant mothers suffering from asthma, doctors will often prescribe them a drug called Singulair pregnancy can continue safely with. If you have been prescribed this drug or are worried about how your asthma could affect your pregnancy if you don't take it then read on...

Firstly, it's important to know that Singulair is a relatively mild medication with a range of mild side effects. The majority of people taking it will experience no side effects whatsoever but a few may experience headaches, stomach cramps, heartburn or indigestion, dizziness, coughs, colds, rashes or tiredness. These are all things that your doctor can help you with and are likely to be so mild that they are much more desirable than having the risk of asthma during pregnancy.

Asthma is an immune response to allergens in the sufferers environment and while many cases of asthma can be eased by removing the allergens (E.G. pets or pollen) there are other cases where this is simply not possible (e.g. for those allergic to cold air or traffic fumes). Because asthma is an immune response and the immune system is weakened naturally during pregnancy it's important to treat it with care. Not taking medication for asthma during pregnancy can result in pre-eclampsia and even premature labor amongst many others which are, obviously, very harmful to your baby. The only major complications that can occur from taking Singulair are worsening of asthmatic symptoms, hallucinations, depression, swelling, dark rings around the eyes (indicating liver damage) and stomach cramps. What you should remember, however, is that these symptoms are very rare indeed and weighed up with the much higher risks of suffering pre-term birth or pre-eclampsia from asthma, taking Singulair is a far safer option.

If you feel that your asthma is very mild then it is best to have a good discussion with your doctor about it. If you are at the stage before pregnancy when you are trying for a baby then it's a very good idea to try taking Singulair now, so that if you do have a bad reaction then you won't harm your baby. The most important thing when taking Singulair pregnancy wise is to keep a very close eye on the symptoms of pregnancy and how your pregnancy progresses. Always attend your scans and appointments with the midwife as these will reassure you that taking Singulair is not harming you or your baby at all.

While Doctors deem Singulair pregnancy safe and will prescribe it to pregnant women suffering with asthma, it is still like any other medication to be taken during pregnancy and must be taken with caution. Never take more than the dosage suggests, or less for that matter. If you do accidentally take too much then contact your doctor immediately or seek other professional medical advice. When taken properly, Singulair helps to keep pregnancy safe from the harmful conditions caused by asthma and is the best choice for expectant women suffering from it.

In animal studies on Singulair and pregnancy, the drug did not appear to cause problems in either the pregnant rats or their offspring. As a result, the FDA has classified it as a pregnancy Category B medication. Although the full risks are unknown, if you are taking Singulair and pregnancy occurs, your healthcare provider may have you continue taking it if the benefits outweigh the risks.

I'm just curious, but has anyone tried Singulair? I had read that ICer's tend to have a increase in leukotriene's in their urine. Anyway to make a long story short, I'm on Atarax, but I've added Singulair, and I believe my urgency and freguency have calmed down, or it just could be I just got over a major flare. Thanks for listening..

I can tell you for a fact that this drug does effect people in a horrible way! My daughter who is 3 years old started taking it 8 days ago and as off day 2 she started to get super agitated, angry, whinny and sad! As most of you have said she used to be happy and loving all the time. She also is now scared at night and we used to just say bed time and she would go, now it is a fight. After our bedtime fight last night I started to wonder what has changed then I got to thinking about Singulair the only difference in her day to day life, so I decided to go online and check. I starting reading on several sites and they all are the same. I also starting taking singulair 3 years ago right after the birth of my first child. My hips always hurt I am always cranky I can't lose the weight from that pregnancy or my next pregnancy. I have been caulking it up to lack of sleep with the babies. Now, I just know for sure that it is this Drug. I am scared to stop it, I will be calling my Dr monday to find out what is the safest way to stop and I will be telling everyone I know to stop or never use this drug. This is so scary!!!!

Singulair 10mg Overview

Singulair Description

Montelukast sodium, the active ingredient in SINGULAIR, is a selective and orally active leukotriene receptor antagonist that inhibits the cysteinyl leukotriene CysLT1 receptor.

Montelukast sodium is described chemically as [ R -( E )]-1-[[[1-[3-[2-(7-chloro-2-quinolinyl)ethenyl]phenyl]-3-[2-(1-hydroxy-1-methylethyl)phenyl]propyl]thio]methyl]cyclopropaneacetic acid, monosodium salt.

The empirical formula is C35 H35 ClNNaO3 S, and its molecular weight is 608.18. The structural formula is:

Montelukast sodium is a hygroscopic, optically active, white to off-white powder. Montelukast sodium is freely soluble in ethanol, methanol, and water and practically insoluble in acetonitrile.

Each 10-mg film-coated SINGULAIR tablet contains 10.4 mg montelukast sodium, which is equivalent to 10 mg of montelukast, and the following inactive ingredients: microcrystalline cellulose, lactose monohydrate, croscarmellose sodium, hydroxypropyl cellulose, and magnesium stearate. The film coating consists of: hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose, titanium dioxide, red ferric oxide, yellow ferric oxide, and carnauba wax.

Each 4-mg and 5-mg chewable SINGULAIR tablet contains 4.2 and 5.2 mg montelukast sodium, respectively, which are equivalent to 4 and 5 mg of montelukast, respectively. Both chewable tablets contain the following inactive ingredients: mannitol, microcrystalline cellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose, red ferric oxide, croscarmellose sodium, cherry flavor, aspartame, and magnesium stearate.

Each packet of SINGULAIR 4-mg oral granules contains 4.2 mg montelukast sodium, which is equivalent to 4 mg of montelukast. The oral granule formulation contains the following inactive ingredients: mannitol, hydroxypropyl cellulose, and magnesium stearate.
